What is mindfulness?

At its simplest mindfulness is about becoming aware of our thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations. How we think and how we deal with our thoughts and feelings plays a big part in our mental health and our overall happiness and resilience. Mindfulness meditation practices can help us change the way we respond to our thoughts, feelings, and sensations. With practice we can learn to observe our thoughts as if they were clouds passing in the sky above us. Creating this distance between our thoughts and ourselves can help us change the way we think and feel about our experiences.

 

Mindfulness is an ancient practice which has become widespread in the last few decades. It is now used in many Mindfulness-based interventions which include, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). MBCT is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for the prevention of relapse in recurrent depression. 

 

There is an ever expanding body of scientific evidence that shows mindfulness really does work.
